Understanding prescription drug addiction

Understand the medication and the pattern of use.

Prescription drug misuse can include taking more than prescribed, using someone else’s medication, or taking it for a different purpose. Opioid pain medication, sedatives, and stimulants require different clinical considerations. NIDA: Prescription drug misuse.

Physical dependence can occur with some medicines even when they are taken as prescribed. That alone does not establish addiction. A review should consider the medication, its original purpose, the pattern of use, and any difficulty reducing it. FDA: Benzodiazepine safety.

Your assessment and plan

What does assessment and treatment involve?

A complete medication history

Provide the medication names, doses, duration, prescribing clinicians, and any changes in how you take them. Include alcohol, nonprescribed drugs, and other medicines.

The reason medication became important

Pain, sleep difficulties, anxiety, and other concerns need to remain part of the assessment. The treatment plan should account for those needs alongside any harmful pattern of use.

Care with clear responsibilities

Where residential care is suitable, individual therapy and continuing-care planning are coordinated with the medical input agreed in your proposal. Prescribing and medication changes require qualified clinical oversight.

Life during treatment

What is residential life like?

Your private bedroom provides space around individual psychotherapy and medical or specialist appointments. Meals, physical activities and excursions may be shared where appropriate. Clinical review determines the medical support needed before and during your stay.

Clinical suitability

Is this the right level of care?

Do not abruptly stop or change prescribed medication to prepare for a stay. In particular, stopping benzodiazepines suddenly can cause serious withdrawal reactions. Speak with your prescriber; any detoxification, tapering, or stabilization needs must be reviewed before admission. FDA: Benzodiazepine safety.

Continuing care

What happens after your stay?

Planning can clarify which clinician manages medication, how prescriptions and follow-up will be coordinated, and what support is available for pain, sleep, or mental health. Any communication with existing professionals follows your consent.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Does physical dependence always mean addiction?

No. A clinical review distinguishes physical adaptation to a medicine from a pattern of harmful or uncontrolled use. Both may need support, but the appropriate approach can differ.

Should I stop my medication before contacting admissions?

No. Continue to follow your prescriber’s instructions and discuss any intended change with them. Tell admissions about the medication and any previous withdrawal symptoms.

How long is a stay and what does it cost?

A stay usually lasts 4–12 weeks, reviewed individually. The weekly program fee is CHF 55,000 for the setting with a maximum of two clients, or CHF 35,000 for the setting with a maximum of four clients. Your proposal confirms the recommended duration, included services and any additional costs. Explore fees and admissions.
